The older Arduino Deicimila / Duemilanove bootloader works fine with the logic level pin floating (VCCIO - pin 4 on the FTDI chip)
There is a “GravityPlug” class in the JeeLib library to interface with this sensor and read out the 3 axes' accelerations as integers
making it very easy to solder and assemble
