ناول کے ہیرو موسیو مرسو کا کر دار بہت ہی سادہ اور پیچیدہ ہے۔ وہ ایک نہایت دلچسپ شخصیت ہے مگر اس کا سمجھنا کچھ اس قدر آسان نہیں ہے اور اکثر گم سُم رہتا ہے۔ کبھی کبھار بات کرتا ہے تو یہی ایک آدھ جملہ، ہلکی سی طنز،مبہم ساکنا یہ اشارہ مگر موسیو مرسو یاروں کا یار ہے، نہ کسی سے بغض نہ عناد۔چھوٹی سی بات پر خوش ہو جاتا ہے اور بڑی سے بڑی بات پر ٹس سے مس نہیں ہوتا۔ ایک سادہ لو ح انسان ہے، مرنجان مرنج، زندگی کی چھوٹی چھوٹی خوشیوں پر وہ پھولا نہیں سماتا اور بڑے سے بڑے رنج و محن ہنسی خوشی برداشت کر لیتا ہے۔ نہ گلہ ہے دوستوں کا نہ شکایتِ زمانہ غرض ایک مجموعۂ اضداد ہے۔ دیوانہ مگر کارِ خویش سے بیگانہ۔ کچھ پلّے نہیں پڑتا اور سمجھ بھی کیوں کر آئے، وہ بہت کچھ کہتا بھی تو نہیں۔
