Charles Rector had already launched a successful seafood restaurant in Chicago in 1884, when he opened a second Rector's in New York City in 1899. This was a time of high living, high flying financiers, actors, singers and gamblers, who liked to spend their large rolls of cash lavishly. The goal was to be seen, and Rector's on Broadway, in the heart of the theater district, was in
