For the first rod of a new musky angler, I recommend getting one that is in the middle-ground option, sometimes marketed as All Purpose rods (even though they truly arent all purpose.) An 8 heavy rod that supports 2-8 oz lure weights with an action of fast/moderately-fast is a great option as a starter rod
I think the sweet spot for lure weight is 3/8oz -3/4oz total, I've throw a 1/2oz chatterbait (.95oz w/ trailer) on this rod but prefer other rods
