Due to one previous report outlining NAION risk and semaglutide use, the study authors relay that, in response, the American Academy of Ophthalmology has issued a press release for physicians and patients: The Academy has not recommended that patients stop using semaglutide, but rather, that patients experiencing vision loss while taking semaglutide should stop the drug and contact the physician prescribing the medication. 1 They reflect that, because of the association of semaglutide with temporary worsening of diabetic retinopathy, the increased incidence of diabetic macular edema and the concern that rapid correction of hyperglycemia could induce papillitis, physicians prescribing this medication to their patients with type II diabetes should consider a drug regimen that more gradually lowers the HbA1C level. 1 In an invited commentary on the research, also published by JAMA Ophthalmology , commentators point to a few different related studies that have already taken place, detailing their methods and outcomes
